Emergency Responder Course - 
            Advanced First Aid and Resuscitation

 

Whilst general first aid training is good knowledge for those who may occasionally find themselves faced with an emergency medical situation, this course is aimed at people who are designated responders for a high risk environment or activity, and/or are expected to provide a higher level of care using specialised equipment and performing more advanced skills. 

 

This course is delivered in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and applies to all workers or members of the community who may be required to provide oxygen, advanced resuscitation or advanced first aid in the event of an emergency, until the arrival of medical or other assistance.  

Providing effective, lifesaving first aid interventions requires instruction and practical training.  This is especially true when it relates to potentially fatal illnesses and injuries such as those that involve cardiac arrest, severe bleeding, multiple casualty incidents etc. These situations carry a risk of further injury to the casualty and the first aider and it is imperative that training occurs to be able to know what to do when confronted with a real-life incident.

This course aims to develop the skills and knowledge and most importantly the confidence, to coordinate and manage the response, and provide advanced first aid in a challenging environment, in order to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery. 

 

Participants attending this course will develop the skills, knowledge and confidence required to provide an emergency response and use specialised equipment for those in need of resuscitation, in a range of complex situations, including community and workplace settings. Participants will also learn how to monitor and handover the casualty to medical professionals for further care, and how to maintain resuscitation and oxygen equipment.

Course Delivery 

This course will be delivered:

  • In the workplace or at a 1st 10' training facility

  • Online learning with face to face assessment

 

Entry Requirements

Participants must have the physical capacity to position casualties and perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

​

Online study option:  Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies.

​

Course Duration

  • Face to Face – 10 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
     

  • Blended delivery – 8 hours (minimum) face to face course – with the addition of 2-hour self-paced learning to be completed prior to attending the face to face course
     

  • Online delivery with face to face Practical assessment – self paced online learning with a scheduled 2 hour face to face practical assessment
     

  • Refresher training – 8 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates.

 

Assessment Requirements

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

Certificate Renewal Requirements

It is recommended that renewal for each of the units in this course is undertaken every 3 years, with the additional requirement of updating the CPR component every 12 months.

Learning Activities

Delivery of course information and learning activities.

Assessment Activities

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include: 
 

  • Performance tasks:

    • Administer oxygen to a conscious casualty

    • Maintain resuscitation equipment

    • Anaphylaxis (allergic reaction)

    • Breathing difficulties asthma

    • Choking with airway obstruction

    • Head Injury/ Unconscious breathing casualty

    • Bleeding and shock

    • Snake or funnel web spider bite

    • Sprains and fractures

    • Seizures and epilepsy including febrile convulsions​

 

  • Practical scenarios:

    • Perform CPR on an infant

    • Perform CPR on an adult

    • Basic triage for multiple casualty and accident in the workplace

    • Administer oxygen to an unconscious casualty

​

  • Documentation - The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:

    • Incident report forms
       

  • Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of short answer and multiple-choice questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
